In-Mold, Hard Shell and Hybrid Constructions

Every helmet in the range is built around one of three core constructions, each suited to a different balance of weight, ventilation and durability. In-Mold construction fuses a polycarbonate outer shell directly with the impact-absorbing foam liner, allowing for more ventilation and a lighter, cooler helmet, the approach behind the Grid™ Spherical, built for lightweight backcountry protection. Hard Shell construction molds a rugged outer shell to an EPS foam liner for maximum durability at a strong value, as seen in the Ratio™ Mips. Hybrid construction combines a ventilated hard shell upper with a lightweight in-mold lower shell and sidewalls, delivering added protection and style without extra weight, the formula used in the Tor™ Spherical and Orbit™ Spherical.

Mips® and Spherical Technology

Rotational impacts are one of the most common causes of head injury on snow, and most of the range addresses them directly. Mips® uses a low-friction liner and an elastomeric attachment system that lets the interior foam liner rotate independently around the head during an angled impact, reducing rotational force before it reaches the brain. Models like the Taggert Mips, Range Mips and Ratio™ Mips build this system in as standard. Spherical Technology, powered by Mips® and exclusive to Giro, takes this further with a ball-and-socket design and two independent foam layers that allow 10 to 15 millimetres of relative motion between helmet and head on impact, the safety system behind helmets such as the Grid™ Spherical and Signes™ Spherical.

For long days covering the whole resort, the all-mountain ski helmets balance ventilation, protection and comfort for constant movement between terrain. Those heading further from the lifts will find lighter, pack-friendly builds among the ski touring helmets, designed for the climbs as much as the descents. Riders spending their day in the park have the freestyle ski helmets, built with the fit and durability that park laps demand, while snowboard helmets are shaped for riders who need a low profile and a wide field of view. For race day, the ski race helmets include FIS-certified options such as the Signes™ Spherical and the removable-chinbar Ledge™ SL Mips®, built for slalom courses. The range is completed with women's ski helmets and kids ski helmets, the latter equipped with Mips® across the board for young riders on the slopes.

Traditional Vision vs. Integrated Visor

How a helmet works with your eyewear matters as much as how it fits. A traditional setup pairs any ski helmet with a separate pair of goggles, giving the widest choice of lens and fit, and seamless compatibility with all Giro goggles is built into the fit systems across the range. For a simpler setup, the ski helmets with visor integrate the shield directly into the helmet, removing the gap between helmet and goggle altogether, the approach behind the Orbit™ Spherical. Glasses wearers are covered either way: Giro's OTG (Over-the-Glasses) goggles are built with the extra volume and temple cutouts needed to wear prescription glasses underneath, so switching to a visor helmet or sticking with a traditional mask both work with corrective eyewear.

How do I know what size ski helmet I need?

Measure your head circumference in centimetres, wrapping a tape measure around the widest point above your eyebrows and ears, then match it to the size chart for the specific model. Fit systems like In Form™ 2 and Auto Loc™ 2 allow fine adjustment on top of the base size, so always try the helmet on with your goggles before heading out.

Can I wear a beanie under a ski helmet?

A thin, technical liner is fine and won't affect fit or safety systems, but it should sit close to the head without adding bulk. A thick beanie can push the helmet away from the skull and disrupt how the fit system and Mips® or Spherical Technology are designed to work, so a dedicated thin liner is the safer choice on cold days.

How often should I replace a ski helmet?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing a ski helmet every three to five years of regular use, as the foam liner and materials degrade over time even without a visible impact. Any helmet that has taken a hard hit should be replaced immediately, regardless of age, since the impact-absorbing foam is designed to compress once and cannot offer the same protection twice.

What certification should a safe ski helmet meet?

Ski helmets sold in Europe must meet the EN 1077 standard, which tests impact absorption, retention system strength and shell penetration resistance specifically for alpine skiing and snowboarding. Race-specific models add further certification, such as the FIS RH13 standard carried by the Signes™ Spherical.
